This setup allows many users to share a single fiber efficiently without powered splitters, reducing maintenance and energy costs . EPON supports high bandwidth and symmetrical speeds, often up to 1 Gbps or higher, and uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to separate upstream and downstream traffic over a single fiber . Upstream communication is managed using time-division multiple access (TDMA) to prevent collisions, while downstream data is broadcast to all ONUs, which filter packets based on MAC addresses . Compared to traditional copper networks, EPON offers better scalability, energy efficiency, and lower operational costs, making it ideal for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Fiber to the Home (FTTH) deployments, and enterprise networks .
