  4. Housing and Connectors: Protect internal components and provide secure electrical and optical connections. Common form factors include SFP, SFP+, XFP, CFP, and X2/XENPAK .

  • Receiver Sensitivity: Minimum optical power the module can detect while maintaining a low bit error rate (BER), typically measured in dBm. Higher data rates generally reduce sensitivity .
  • Overload Optical Power: Maximum optical power the receiver can handle without saturation. Exceeding this can cause temporary signal distortion or damage .
  • Power Consumption and Thermal Management: Modern modules are designed to minimize power usage and control temperature rise, ensuring stable operation in high-density systems .
