Overview

Electrical-to-optical (E/O) converters, also called electro-optic converters or transducers, convert electrical signals into light pulses for transmission over fiber optic cables. They are essential in fiber optic networks, enabling communication between electronic devices and optical systems while maintaining signal integrity and minimizing interference . These modules typically include a laser or LED transmitter, a photodiode receiver, and supporting electronics .

Common Types of Optical Modules

  • SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Supports data rates up to 4.25 Gbps, widely used in enterprise networks .
  • SFP+ (Enhanced SFP): Supports up to 10 Gbps, suitable for data centers and high-speed networks .
  • QSFP (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable): Supports 40 Gbps and beyond, used in high-performance computing .
  • CFP (C Form-factor Pluggable): Designed for 100 Gbps and higher speeds, ideal for backbone networks . These modules vary in form factor, transmission distance, and wavelength, allowing network designers to balance speed, cost, and reach.

Specialized and High-Performance Modules

  • High-Frequency E/O Converters: Integrated with lasers or modulators, these modules support very high bandwidths (up to 110 GHz) for microwave and RF signal transmission over optical links .
  • Ruggedized Converters: Miniaturized, lightweight modules designed for harsh environments such as military, avionics, or industrial applications. They support Fast, Gigabit, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, as well as video protocols like ARINC 818, DVI, and SMPTE 424 .

Principles of Operation

E/O converters operate by modulating a light source (laser diode or LED) with the incoming electrical signal. Intensity, phase, or frequency modulation techniques are used to encode the information onto the optical carrier. The optical signal is then transmitted through fiber, and at the receiving end, an optical-to-electrical (O/E) converter recovers the original electrical signal .
