Step 3: Prepare for Repair
Gather essential tools: fiber strippers, cleavers, fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit, cleaning supplies, and protective sleeves. Carefully strip the outer jacket and Kevlar strength members without damaging the core, then remove the protective coating to expose the bare fiber. Clean the fiber ends with alcohol and lint-free wipes to prevent contamination .
Step 4: Repair the Fiber
- Fusion Splicing: Align and fuse the fiber ends using a fusion splicer for a low-loss, permanent connection.
- Mechanical Splicing: Use connectors to align fibers if fusion splicing is not available; this is suitable for temporary or field repairs. After splicing, test the connection with an OTDR or power meter to ensure minimal signal loss (ideally <0.1 dB), .
Step 5: Protect and Restore
Apply protective boots, heat-shrink sleeves, or dust caps to exposed ends. For outdoor installations, use armored, waterproof cables and maintain the correct bend radius to prevent future damage. Rebury or secure the cable properly if it was excavated .
Step 6: Decide Between Repair and Replacement
- Repair if the damage is localized, insertion loss is below 3 dB, and connectors are intact.
- Replace if multiple breaks exist, insertion loss exceeds 3 dB, or connectors are corroded or burned .
Step 7: Preventive Maintenance
- Inspect fibers regularly (every 6–12 months in professional settings).
- Clean connectors before mating.
- Respect minimum bend radius (≥10× cable diameter).
