Article Overview
Testing the grounding of fiber optic cables involves verifying continuity of metallic components and ensuring proper bonding to a grounding system.
Understanding Fiber Optic Grounding
Fiber optic cables themselves transmit light and do not carry electrical current, so fully dielectric cables require no grounding. However, many fiber optic cables include metallic elements such as steel armor, copper strength members, aluminum moisture barriers, or metallic messenger wires, which must be grounded to prevent electric shock, equipment damage, or fire hazards. Additionally, any metallic conduit or tray carrying fiber optic cables must also be grounded according to electrical codes (NEC Article 770, NFPA 70) .
Steps to Test Grounding
- Identify Metallic Components Strip back 6–8 inches of the cable jacket to expose metallic elements like armor, foil layers, or strength members. Ensure the surface is clean and free of oxidation using a wire brush or fine sandpaper .
- Attach a Bonding Clamp Secure a UL-listed cable bonding clamp or manufacturer-supplied grounding kit to the exposed metallic component. This ensures a low-resistance contact point for grounding .
- Connect the Grounding Conductor Run a copper grounding wire (minimum 14 AWG or as specified by local code) from the bonding clamp to the nearest grounding electrode or equipment grounding bus. Keep the conductor short and direct to minimize impedance .
- Verify Continuity Use a multimeter or continuity tester to check that the metallic component is electrically continuous with the grounding system. Place one probe on the metallic element and the other on the grounding bus or electrode. A low-resistance reading confirms proper grounding. For long cable runs, test at both ends to prevent induced voltages from lightning or power-line faults .
- Document Results Record the continuity readings and grounding locations for compliance and maintenance purposes. This ensures that all metallic components are properly bonded and grounded .
Additional Considerations
- Grounding should be performed at each building entry point and termination location for cables spanning multiple buildings.
- Always follow local electrical codes and industry standards (NEC, IEEE, TIA) for grounding practices.
- Fully dielectric fiber optic cables without metallic elements do not require grounding, but any metallic hardware associated with the installation should still be bonded . By following these steps, you can ensure that fiber optic cables with metallic components are safely grounded and compliant with electrical safety standards.
