Article Overview

A 10kV busbar connection requires proper insulation, mechanical support, and temporary grounding during maintenance, with earthing switches used primarily on the load side.

Busbar Design and Materials

10kV busbars are typically made of aluminium or copper, chosen based on current-carrying requirements and site conditions. They can be air-insulated and installed indoors or outdoors, with supports designed to handle short-circuit forces and thermal expansion ( ). Busbars are often modular, with sections connected via insulated sleeves to maintain a continuous, potential-free system ( ). Proper spacing and support calculations are essential to prevent mechanical resonance and ensure structural integrity.

Insulation and Electrical Considerations

Busbars use laminated or coated insulation materials such as Nomex®, Mylar®, Kapton®, or epoxy powder coatings to provide electrical isolation and reduce inductance and impedance ( ). The cross-sectional area of the conductor is calculated based on current requirements, with a safety margin to account for heat accumulation and multiple laminated layers. Plating of busbar terminations (tin, nickel, or gold) improves electrical contact and reduces voltage drop.

Earthing and Maintenance

In 10kV switchgear, earthing switches are generally installed on the load side of the busbar, after the circuit breaker and load break disconnector ( ). The busbar side usually does not have a dedicated earthing switch; instead, temporary busbar grounding kits are used during maintenance. These kits reliably connect the busbar to earth using grounding stakes and cables, allowing safe maintenance operations. Earthing switches, when present, are interlocked with upstream breakers to prevent unsafe operations.

Mechanical Support and Installation

Busbars are mounted using aluminium double “C”-profiles, angle brackets, and plastic fastening clamps. Supports are classified as fixed bearings or plain bearings to allow axial sliding due to thermal expansion ( ). The spacing of supports is determined by short-circuit forces, material rigidity, and mechanical resonance considerations. Modular systems allow on-site adjustments for alignment and connection to switchgear components.

Safety and Operational Best Practices

  • Always verify the status of earthing switches using mechanical indicators or observation windows before maintenance ( ).
  • Follow two-person supervision and operational permit procedures for high-voltage work.
  • Ensure temporary grounding is applied before any work on the busbar.
  • Maintain proper clearance and insulation to prevent accidental contact and arcing. By adhering to these design, insulation, and grounding practices, a 10kV busbar connection can be safely installed and maintained, ensuring reliable power distribution in industrial or utility applications.
